The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe is governed by nine elected members of the Muckleshoot Tribal Council, which has full authority over the sale, lease, and dispensation of Tribal land, and manages the Tribe’s economic and business affairs, and regulates its domestic affairs.
The Constitution and Bylaws of the Tribe were ratified in 1936. Tribal sovereignty and resulting rights derive from the U.S. Treaties of Medicine Creek (1854) and Point Elliot (1855). The Government of the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe consists of approximately 1,400 employees; spanning Education, Health and Wellness, Housing, Culture, Operations, and other services for the Tribe — 40% are Muckleshoot Tribal Members, 20% are non-Muckleshoot Natives, and 40% are non-Native Americans.
Tribal Government is separate from the Muckleshoot Resort-Casino and Muckleshoot businesses, which add 2,000 employees to the region together.
Muckleshoot Community Development includes the Housing Authority, Planning and Construction, and Public Works Departments.
The Housing Authority provides Tribal Members low-interest home loans to support private home ownership, rental homes with subsidized rent, a drug and alcohol-free townhouse complex that is drug and alcohol-free, and is building a 50-unit supportive housing complex.
Muckleshoot Public Works manages its own deep-well water system, the Reservation’s sewer system, and its solid waste and recycling transfer station. The Tribe continuously improves its infrastructure and recently deployed high-bandwidth Internet available throughout the Reservation.
Planning and Construction establishes building codes and implement compliance while engaging with the community to explore and create short and long-range master plans.
The Muckleshoot Housing Authority provides housing and financial services to the community.
The Planning Department's mission is to lead in the development of plans, policies and procedures pertaining to all aspects of community growth and development ─ and provide quality planning and implementation as well as administer policies and procedures fairly and accurately.
This community development division acquires land for the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe at the direction of Tribal Council, places land in trust on behalf of the Tribe and individuals, and manages lands and properties not assigned to a specific program.
Muckleshoot Public Works provides services such as solid waste transfer, firewood, ground maintenance, the Water Utility District, Sanitary Sewer and Storm Utility District, and engineering to the Muckleshoot Tribal Government and Tribal members.
Trust Services provides local assistance to the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, Tribal members, and trust landowners on issues that arise with the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) or the Bureau of Trust Funds Administration (BTFA).
The Muckleshoot Culture Division leads efforts to revitalize Muckleshoot culture while expanding the cultural and intellectual property of the Tribe. The department is committed to creating culturally relevant spaces for Muckleshoot Culture to be taught and revitalized through employing Tribal and community members with cultural knowledge and expertise.
And as stewards of the land and water we inhabit and access, the Tribe’s role as co-manager of the natural resources in this area benefits the entire region. The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe has full-time biologists to help manage wildlife and natural resources, provides funding for salmon hatcheries and rearing facilities, a Habitat program, and owns and manages the 105,000 acre Tomanamus Forest.
